Another game is up for TV adaptation and this time it’s Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix’s MMORPG with a troubled past.
Final Fantasy XIV originally released in 2010, to universal negativity, and did so poorly that it was shut down and relaunched as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in 2013. The reboot was a vast improvement and has been doing well ever since, with three major expansions and over 16 million registered players.
Final Fantasy XIV takes place in Eorzea, a region recovering from an apocalyptic event that took out the previous version of the game and that is now preparing for invasion from a powerful empire to the north. The player is the hero that will save everything, but not before doing a bunch of odd jobs, and ingratiating themselves with a variety of guilds, tribes, sects etc. – MMORPG stuff. Since this is Final Fantasy, there’s an elemental magic system and you get a chocobo companion.
So far, we know that the live-action series will be an original story, that also takes place in Eorzea, will involve a Cid (because Final Fantasy), and will contain chocobos.
The FFXIV adaptation is being produced by Hivemind, the same studio behind Netflix’s upcoming Witcher series, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot yet, since we don’t know if the Witcher series is any good.
