Myst

Myst franchise is getting a multi-platform universe because that’s what all the cool kids are doing

You remember Myst, that tricksy puzzle game you tried playing as a child, but just stared at because you didn’t know what to do with the first puzzle, so you moved on to Phantasmagoria, which you really shouldn’t have been playing, and traumatised yourself? Just me? Cool. Well, it’s getting a movie, TV series, and reality TV show.

This isn’t the first time they’ve tried to bring Cyan Worlds’ classic adventure-puzzler franchise to the screen, but attempts in 2014 and 2015 both fizzled out, so now Village Roadshow Entertainment has bought the film and TV rights, with the intention of developing a “multi-platform universe”.

The original Myst had you trapped on the eponymous island, solving puzzles in order to find a way to leave, but also trying to find out what happened to Sirrus and Achenar, who you discover trapped in books. They are the sons of Atrus (also trapped in a book) and would very much like to be set free. As you work your way through different worlds, or Ages, you find out their story is dodgier than you realised and you can decide who to help, or if you even want to help anyone at all. The game had different endings depending on your decisions.

Village Roadshow will, apparently, be expanding on the existing mythology.

As Polygon pointed out, the series would be a prime candidate for Netflix’s interactive TV offering, and a reality TV show about people solving puzzles could probably be entertaining, even if nobody gets clubbed to death, but I’m not sure about a film.
