Back in 2017, former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw released a letter, onto his blog, that contained what his plot would have been for Half-Life 2: Episode 3. It was written in code for, I have to assume, legal reasons, even though Valve doesn’t appear to have any intention of doing anything with it. Anyway, the internet deciphered the code and a bunch of fans decided to make the game themselves.
Thus, Project Borealis was born. The 80-strong group of developers has been working weekends and evenings to bring the coded synopsis to life and they’ve just released a new update on their progress.
It’s all looking pretty impressive and those fluffy headcrabs would be a merchandising gold mine, just saying.
The team intends to release the game for free, at present, and doesn’t foresee any problems from Valve, since the company has a history of allowing fan-made games to exist. Project Borealis is being developed using Unreal Engine 4, instead of Source, because it’s not ancient.
I guess it might get awkward if Valve actually does release Half-Life 3 at some point, but the odds of that happening are pretty slim.
