With the launch this week of its genre mashup Apex Legends, it was already kind of obvious that Respawn Entertainment probably wasn’t working on Titanfall 3. And if it wasn’t, this was confirmed by producer Drew McCoy, who tells Eurogamer that “the world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making”, so Respawn Entertainment isn’t working on Titanfall 3, and now you know. Bummer.
But according to publisher EA, a new Titanfall game is in development. It’s not Titanfall 3, but it’s Titanfall… something.
“As the live service evolves,” EA boss Andrew Wilson explains in a recent earnings call, “Respawn also plans to launch a premium game this year that is a new twist on the Titanfall universe. More to come on that in the months ahead.”
So, a mobile game? Maybe, but maybe not, because whatever it is, it’s a “premium” game, and mobile games mostly aren’t. Apex Legends could be described as “a new twist on the Titanfall universe”, but it’s out now and it’s free. A new Titanfall sequel was in development at some point, but the studio’s acquisition by EA in 2017 could’ve shut it down – or perhaps that game was turned into Apex Legends. Who even knows.
Despite positive reviews, Titanfall 2 was not exactly a mega-seller for Respawn or EA, so I guess a “new twist” was inevitable. Apex Legends is an intriguing new diversion for the franchise, sooooo.
