In late May, Epic Games announced that they would be making $100,000,000 (yes, Doctor Evil – that’s one hundred million dollars!) of funds available for prize pools in Fortnite’s inaugural year of competitive play. On Tuesday, the company decided to bless us with more information on how exactly they planned to spend that money, including the first ever Fortnite World Cup.
Entry into competitive gaming would not only be global, but inclusive of players of different skill levels, and the tournament will span everything from community-organised to major events. It’s to be a celebration of the Fortnite community and the love of competitive play.
“The $100,000,000 will be split between many events at different levels of competition around the globe,” the team explains. “Fortnite World Cup play will focus on Solos and Duos, but there’ll be plenty of opportunities to squad-up in competition, too.”
More specific details are on the way, so here’s to hoping that Africa gets some love. Check out the announcement video below for all the information, or visit the Epic Games website if you’d prefer to read the exact same words (no, really).
