Hollywood annual who’s-who, what’s-what, and who-wore-what extravaganza was last night, and in the interests of not spoiling anything significant above the line break for those of you planning to watch it later tonight, there were no awkward envelope malfunctions. Maybe that’s also a spoiler.
Okay, but from now there are definitely spoilers.
Guillermo del Toro’s intriguing merman love drama The Shape of Water was this year’s big winner, claiming four awards including best movie and best director. As host Jimmy Kimmel explained to the post-#MeToo audience, “we will always remember this year as the year men screwed up so badly, women started dating fish”. In other categories, Frances McDormand scooped best actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Gary Oldman took best actor for his performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Sam Rockwell nabbed the best supporting actor trophy, also for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and best supporting actress went to Alison Janney for the Tonya Harding ice-skating biopic I, Tonya.
